Becoming a member of the Indian Air Force is a dream for many youngsters. The Air Force teaches you all, not only making men and women of young boys and girls but making them leaders in life. Youngsters can join the Indian Air Force (IAF) in many ways. The IAF provides opportunities to the candidates depending on his/her qualifications, one can join one of the various branches in the IAF.

There are two types of commissioning you can opt for:

  1. Permanent Commission (PC): A Permanent Commission means a career in the Air Force till you retire. Permanent Commission Officers continue to serve till the age of superannuation.
  2. Short Service Commission (SSC): A Short Service Commission means a limited period career in the Air Force. Ten years from the date of commissioning. An extension of four years may be granted subject to service requirements, availability of vacancies, suitability, merit and willingness.

 

Broadly the Air Force has three branches:

Here, we are discussing according to branches:

 

 

FLYING BRANCH

 

You surely fly high by joining the Flying branch of the IAF. You are trained as a Fighter pilot or a Helicopter pilot or a Transport pilot and are part of various peace and wartime missions.

1.Intermediate (10+2):

            NDA: The eligibility criteria for the particular is that age is 16 ½ to 19½ yrs. as on first day of the month in which course is due to commence. Qualification is 12th Class of 10+2 System of Education with Minimum of 50% marks each in Maths & Physics  and Marital Status should be Un Married.

 

2.Graduate:

          The eligibility criteria for the particular is that age is 20 to 24 years and Marital Status should be Un- Married. Qualification is   Graduates (Three Year Course) in any discipline from a recognised University who have attained minimum 60% marks or equivalent

OR BE/B Tech (Four Year Course) from a recognised university with minimum 60% marks or equivalent OR Cleared Section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institute Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognised University with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent OR NCC Air Wing Senior Division ’C’ certificate and validity of the certificate would be two years before the date of advertisement.

 

GROUND DUTY (NON-TECH) BRANCH

 

Managing human and material resources, the Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branch is the mechanism that steers the Indian Air Force.

The eligibility criteria for the particular is that age is 20 to 26 years and Marital Status is Candidates below the age of 25 years should be unmarried.

As a Graduate you can join as an officer in any of the following Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branches:

ADMINISTRATION BRANCH: Qualification criteria is Graduate Degree (Minimum three year degree course) in any discipline from a recognised university with 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.

            ACCOUNTS BRANCH: Qualification criteria is B.Com degree (minimum three year degree course) from a recognised university with a minimum 60% marks or equivalent.

 

LOGISTICS BRANCH: Qualification criteria is Graduate Degree (Minimum three year degree course) in any discipline from a recognised university with 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.

EDUCATION BRANCH: Qualification criteria is Passed 10+2 and Post-Graduation with 50% in any discipline including integrated courses offering PG (Single degree without permission to exit and lateral entry) and with 60% marks in Graduation in any discipline. For integrated courses (single degree without permission to exit and lateral entry), the minimum duration must be as per prevailing UGC guidelines with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together.

METEROLOGY BRANCH: Qualification criteria is Post Graduation Degree in any science stream/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Geography/ Computer Applications/ Environmental Science/ Applied Physics/ Oceanography/ Agricultural Meteorology/ Ecology & Environment/ Geo-physics/ Environmental Biology. All candidates should have scored a minimum 50% marks in aggregate in all papers of Post Graduation put together (provided Maths & Physics were studied at Graduation level with a minimum of 55% marks in both).

GROUND DUTY (TECH) BRANCH

 

As an officer in the Ground Duty (Technical) Branch, you propel and manage your team to ensure that the Indian Air Force remains airworthy. You would be incharge of some of the most sophisticated equipment in the world by joining one of the sub branches based on your qualification.

The eligibility criteria for the particular is that age is 20 to 26 years and Marital Status is Candidates below the age of 25 years should be unmarried.

            MECHANICAL BRANCH: Qualification criteria is that a candidate should have minimum of 50% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level and have undergone any one of the following educational qualifications:-

A minimum of four year degree graduation / integrated post-graduation qualification in Engineering / Technology from recognised university   OR Cleared Section A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) OR Cleared section A and B examination of Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies
With a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent in the following disciplines: -

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering and Automation
  • Mechanical Engineering (Production)
  • Mechanical Engineering (Repair and Maintenance)
  • Mechatronics
  • Industrial Engineering

 

            ELECTRONICS BRANCH: Qualification criteria is that a candidate should have minimum of 50% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level and have undergone any one of the following educational qualifications: -

A minimum of four-year graduation / integrated post-graduation qualification in Engineering / Technology from recognised university OR Cleared Section A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) OR Cleared Section A and B examination of Aeronautical Society of India OR Graduate membership examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies
With a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent in the following disciplines.

  • Computer Science and Engineering / Technology
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering

To be commissioned officer in Indian Army one has to appear for Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview.
