ARMS OF INDIAN ARMY

Service is our prime duty…

 

The Indian Army is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces. Indian Army is regarded as one of the strongest armies in the world. The objective of Indian Army is to safeguard the nation from external or internal threats.

 

ORGANISATION OF INDIAN ARMY

Though the army has a particular formation and structures such as-

1. Section: The smallest unit of the army is called "section", it contains 10-12 soldiers.

2.  Platoon: It consists 4 sections.

3. Company: It consists 4 platoons. Its Chief is called the company commander.

4. Battalion: Its Chief is called Colonel.

5. Brigade: Its Chief is called Brigadier.

6. Division: Its Chief is called Major General.

7. Corps: Its Chief is called Lieutenant General.

The army is further divided into different two different departments-

  • Combat Arms- Combat arms are the fighting arms who engage the enemy directly in actual combat.
  • Services- Apart from the Combat Arms, the remaining whole army is kept under the services. Their main task is to provide logistical (food) material to the army and administrated the army.

 

 

THE COMBAT ARMS OF THE INDIAN ARMY

"I am a Soldier; I fight where I am told and

I win where I fight… "

In the Combat Arms, those soldiers are involved who participated in the search operation and are engaged in fighting.
 

Let us discuss Combat Arms in details:

The Combat Arms is further divided into two subgroups:

  • Fighting arms
  • Supporting arms,

FIGHTING ARMS-

INFANTRY: Also known as the foot soldiers unit. Infantry fights with the enemy face to face using guns. It comprises soldiers specifically trained to engage, fight, and defeat the enemy in face-to-face combat.

ARMOURED: The difference is Infantry moves on legs these troops are replaced with Armoured tanks and Armoured vehicles. Armoured corps comprises of tanks. Tanks are the fighting vehicles designed for front-line combat which combines operational mobility and tactical offensive and defensive capabilities. Armoured corps also includes Cavalry Regiments.

MECHANIZED INFANTRY: It is same as the Infantry but it is provided with Armoured vehicles.

 

 

 

 

SUPPORTING ARMS-

ARTILLERY: It is a Unit which supports the combat troops by providing cover fire to the on-foot soldiers and armoured troops so that easy penetration towards the target is possible. Artillery comprises with heavier long-range weapons which causes heavy damage to the enemies.

ARMY AIR DEFENCE (AAD) : AAD is an active corps of the Indian Army and a major combative formation tasked with air defences of the country from foreign threats. AAD provides support against enemy air attack. AAD uses anti-aircraft guns and surface to air missiles to destroy aerial enemy targets.

ARMY AVIATION CORPS (AAC) : The army aviation pilots are drawn from other combat arms, including artillery officers, to form a composite third dimensional force for an integrated battle. AAC provides tactical air transport, reconnaissance, and medical evacuation to army. AAC provides rapid mobility to troops in the field. AAC is inducting attack helicopters to increase its capabilities.

CORPS OF SIGNALS : Handles all the communication of the Indian army. The Signals provide physical dispatch of messages and takes care of cyber security.

 

 

 

THE SERVICES OF THE INDIAN ARMY

"LEADERS win through LOGISTICS”

Those troops that provide the logistical support to the Arms are called Services.

  1. Army Education Corps: it provides educational training to the troops
  2. Army Medical Corps: AMC provides medical facilities to all the defence personnel and their dependents. AMC is capable of providing treatment of every kind.
  3. Army Ordnance Corps: The AOC is responsible for procurement, storage and supply of vehicles, equipment, clothing and weapon systems. In other words, all most every item of army except ration and fuel.
  4. Army Postal Service Corps: Indian Army has its own postal service corps which caters the postal needs of defence services.
  5. Army Service Corps: the ASC is responsible for procurement, storage and distribution of supplies, transport, fuel oils and lubricants to Army.
  6. Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers: The EME is responsible for repairing and maintaining all electrical, electronic and mechanical devices which are in service with Indian Army.
  7. Corps of Military Police: The role of this Corps is primarily to assist Army formations in maintaining a high standard of discipline of its troops, prevent breaches of various rules and regulations. In addition, the CMP is trained to handle prisoners of war and to regulate traffic, as well as to handle basic telecommunication equipment such as telephone exchanges.
  8. Intelligence Corps: As the name suggests, intelligence corps works to gather intelligence for Army.
  9. Judge Advocate General’s Department: Looks into the legal matters related to Indian Army.
  10. Army Dental Corps: Army Dental Corps provides dental care to all the personnel
  11. Remount and Veterinary Corps: procurement, breeding and training of Army dogs. Also the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases is the responsibility.
  12. Military Farm Services: Military Farms is a quasi-commercial organization with  role Supply of fresh milk and butter to troops in peace, field and high altitude areas at their location on daily basis. Production, procurement, transportation & issue of baled hay to AT Units at their location as per demand.
  13. Pioneer Corps-  Pioneer units are mostly committed in forward and operational areas. They may also be employed as guards and escorts for headquarters, installations, ammunition trains and convoys.
  14. Territorial army - The Territorial Army is active in numerous field. It has following types of units: Infantry Battalions including Home & Hearth Battalions, Ecological Task Forces, Railway Engineer units, Oil Sector units, Engineer units for Line of Control Fencing.
  15. Defence Security Corps: The role of DSC is to protect Defence units /installations where DSC cover is sanctioned under specific orders of the Govt of India against minor sabotage and pilferage. To fulfil this role the DSC provides armed security staff, static guards, searchers, escorts and mobile patrols by day and night. The personnel are armed so as to afford a higher degree of protection.

 

 

So, we can  see Combat Arms and Services  work altogether and ensures smooth running of the chain of command.
