 NSG  (THE BLACK CAT)

 

 

The NSG is a counter-terrorism unit that formally came into existence in 1986 by an act of Parliament- ‘National Security Guard Act, 1986’.

National Security Guard personnel are sometimes referred to as The Black Cats.

It is modelled on the British Special Air Service as well as Germany's GSG 9 (Grenzschutzgruppe 9 or "Border Guard Group 9").

Training centre of NSG commando is situated in Manesar,Haryana.

 

It is headed by an IPS officer appointed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • The idea behind raising such force came in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star (an Indian military action carried out to remove militant religious leader from the Golden Temple, Amritsar) in 1984, Akshardham Temple attack and the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi, for ‘combating terrorist activities with a view to protect states against internal disturbances

 

NSG force is divided into two subgroups: 

 

1.Special action group 

 

SAG comprises 54% of the NSG force and is an elite offensive wing unit whose members are selected from the Indian Army.

 

2. Special Ranger group

 

SRG consists of CAPF members from CRPF,CISF,BSF,ITBP and RAF, the main job of SRG is to assist the SAG wing.

 

NSG has set five regional hubs under regional deployment. SCG consists of personnel both from Army and CAPFs for counter-terror operations within their area of responsibility.

How to join

 

There is no direct recruitment in NSG, to join NSG either one has to join CAPF or Army, then only one can apply for NSG.

Age should not be more than 35 years to join NSG.

 

Training

 

To become an NSG, candidates have to undergo rigorous training, its basic training course is of 90 days and the candidate who completes this basic training.Then he is sent for advanced training for 9 months, its training is so tough that its drop out rate is more than 70%.

NSG commandos are trained to complete the task at any cost, in any situation and at any circumstance.The target rate of NSG commandos is more than 85 percent.

NSG COMMANDO is mainly trained to take precise headshots.

During their shooting practice training, a commando fires more than 14 hundred rounds in 2 months.

NSG commandos have to go through a battle inoculation program during which 1 commando stands next to the target and the other commando does his shooting practice on that target.During this, no commando uses a bullet proof jacket.

To maintain the young profile of the NSG force, the commandos are sent to its parent unit after 5 years of service.

Operation and training: A Major General of the Indian Army, on deputation, designated as Inspector General (operations), is responsible for the planning and conduct of operations. Training is under another Inspector General (Training), located in Manesar, Gurgaon. They are further assisted by two DIGs – DIG (Operations) and DIG (Training).

 NSG commandos came into the limelight when terrorists attacked the Taj Hotel, then NSG played an important role in killing those terrorists, since then people from every corner of India started knowing NSG.

During Operation Black Tornado, Major Unnikrishnan, a brave officer of NSG, showed his indomitable courage, efficient leadership and efficient warfare policy.then he was later awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously.

 

During Operation Black Tornado, havildar Gajendra Singh bisht also showed his valor and gave martyrdom while protecting the country.Then he was also awarded the Ashok Chakra posthumously.
