Around the time of the Kargil war, Government of India  approved a 30- year submarine building plan. It included the construction of 24 submarines indigenously by 2030.

 

The submarine building plan had a separate series of submarine building lines with code names Project 75 and Project 75I.

 

 

 

 

PROJECT 75 :

Cost

● ₹23,652 crore (equivalent to ₹290 billion or US$3.8 billion in 2020) for six units

● ₹3,942 crore (equivalent to ₹48 billion or US$640 million in 2020) per unit (FY 2016)

Project 75 is a programme by the Indian Navy that envisaged building six Scorpene-Class attack submarines.

 

The Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) is manufacturing six Scorpene submarines with technical assistance from the Naval Group of France.

 

The submarines in the project 75 scorpion class are powered by the conventional diesel electric propulsion system.

 

There are two types of submarines

1St  Diesel-Electric submarine

2nd Nuclear powered submarine

 

● Submarines under Project 75 commissioned to the Indian Navy so far:-

● 1st Scorpene submarine kalvari-Dec 2017

● 2nd Scorpene submarine khanderi:-Sep 2019

● 3rd Scorpene submarine karanj:-march 2021

● 4th scorpene Submarine Vella:-nov 2021

● Trial of 5th submarine Vagsheer is going on till now.

● 6th under construction

 

PROJECT 75I :

 

Builders:-

● Four foreign firms have so far responded to the Indian government’s request for proposals for the project.

● These are French firm Naval Group, Russia’s Rosoboronexport Rubin Design Bureau, Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Sweden’s Saab.

 

Cost:-

● ₹43,000 crore (US$5.7 billion)

Capable of conducting -

● Anti-surface warfare (ASuW)

● Anti-submarine warfare (AAW)

● ISR

● Special Operations Forces (SOF)

● Supporting operations ashore

● Operating in open ocean and shallow/littoral waters

This will be an important step towards meeting broader national objectives, encouraging self-reliance and aligning the defence sector with the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government.

 

Project-75 (I) envisages indigenous construction of six modern conventional submarines with contemporary equipment, weapons & sensors including Fuel-Cell based AIP (Air Independent Propulsion Plant), advanced torpedoes, modern missiles and state-of-the-art countermeasure systems.
